McLaren 720S

Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the 12C, the company’s first mass-produced sports car, the McLaren Super Series has had a successful three of years on the market as of 2017. It spawned several road-going and race-spec versions, including the 650S, 675LT, and 650S GT3, forming the brand’s most comprehensive family of vehicles yet. But, despite its success and tremendous performance, the 650S won’t be around forever, with a replacement set arrive at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Codenamed P14, the successor to the 650S will be the first new model in McLaren’s new business plan, which includes a £1-billion ($1.23 billion as of January 2017) investment for 15 new products by 2022. Confirmed to use a new carbon-fiber tub called the Monocage II carbon-fiber tub, the upcoming sports car will also ditch the company’s ubiquitous twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 for a new, 4.0-liter unit. However, the P14 will be a significant departure from the current 650S in terms of design, which will incorporate radical active aerodynamics.

The upcoming sports car has already been spotted testing in prototype form, which allowed us to create an accurate rendering, and McLaren has just confirmed that the P14 will make its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. The vehicle’s market name has yet to be unveiled, but previous reports suggest that the replacement for the 650S will be called the 720S, thus use a denomination based on its PS rating. But more on that in my speculative review below.
