Audi RS4 Avant

With Audi having already launched the new-generation 2016 Audi A4 sedan and A4 Avant, we can’t help but wonder when will the high-performance RS versions of both vehicles will follow. While the previous-generation RS4 didn’t include a sedan, the package was available for the wagon. Unfortunately, the Germans were against bringing it to the U.S., leaving us with only the A4-based 2013 Audi allroad as the only Audi-badged grocery-getter. There’s no doubt Ingolstadt will offer a new RS4 Avant, but what will it look like and what engine will get under the hood?

To be honest, it’s not much of a mystery. Given that previous RS cars were heavily based on their standard counterparts, it’s safe to assume that the new RS4 Avant will also be a beefed-up A4 wagon, which already sports Audi’s new design language with more angular line front and rear. The numerous prototypes that were spied testing on public roads in recent month also come to confirm just that, leaving only performance data and minor touches inside the cabin in the vault.

As to when a new RS4 Avant would hit the streets, it should happen sometime in 2017. That’s because even though the outgoing, B8-generation A4 is eight years old, the current RS4 Avant has only been around since 2012. Audi will likely want to keep it around a while longer. There are also rumors that Audi may want to bring the RS4 sedan back to give the 2016 BMW M3 and the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 a run for their money, but that’s another story for another time.

Updated 03/28/2017: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Audi RS4 Avant out for a new testing session, this time on the roads next to Nurburgring.
