As far as SUVs and crossovers go, every manufacturer seems to have an offering that fits exactly what you need in an overgrown people hauler. Some manufacturers have three, while others like Chevy have five, but there’s one mainstream automaker that hasn’t brought their A-game to the SUV market yet, and that automaker is Volkswagen. The brand has its fair share of hatchbacks, but it only has two SUVs – the compact Volkswagen Tiguan and the much larger Volkswagen Touareg. With the Tiguan starting out nearly $25,000 and the Touareg starting out at $49,495, VW lacks the support of a midsize SUV in a very competitive market. Originally previewed as the Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept, and recently dubbed the “Atlas,” VW’s newest SUV will slot in right between the Touareg and the Tiguan, and will offer third-row seating and compete against the likes of cars like the Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Dodge Durango, Ford Edge, and the Hyundai Santa Fe, among others.
News of VW’s newest SUV receiving the name Atlas just recently surfaced and has yet to be officially confirmed. Then again, VW also trademarked the name “Teramont” that could also be used as the SUV’s official name. Recently, it was announced that it would have a more “American” name, so Atlas seems to be the best bet. However, the Teramont name – which would follow with VW’s “T” naming structure – could be used in markets outside of the U.S.
With that said, we obviously know very little about the Atlas/Teramont at this time, but looking back at the CrossBlue concept we can get a pretty good idea of what VW’s next SUV could bring to the table. So, let’s quit wasting time and get to speculating a bit.
