2017 Jeep Grand One

Not every concept for the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari is a Wrangler. Sure, there’s the Compass-based Trailpass Concept, but this… this is The Grand One. It’s a 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ that Jeep bought off Craigslist and restored with absolute attention to detail. The 1990s is running strong here, as Jeep designers include an old-school car phone and Nintendo Gameboy. The body paint even has translucent woodgrain paneling along the sides. Jeep’s purpose here is to honor the Grand Cherokee’s 25th anniversary, having debuted in 1992.

This ZJ started life as an ordinary Grand Cherokee with the old 5.2-liter V-8 and four-speed automatic transmission. Those components were restored to proper working order, as was the rest of the Jeep. Modifications include a two-inch suspension lift to help clear the 33-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tires. The new Dana 44 solid axles were also moved apart, with the front axle relocated two inches forward, while the rear was moved back three inches – both thanks to longer control arms. The wheel wells were widened to accommodate the move, while wider fender flairs cover the meatier tires. Locking differentials were also included.

The Jeep is coated in a warm blue hue, complemented by matte black accents on the hood, grille, and bumpers. Custom 18-inch wheels were created to look like the lace-style wheels originally offered on upper trim levels of the first-generation Grand Cherokee. And it wouldn’t be a Jeep build if there weren’t Easter Eggs scattered about. A “Hammer Time” decal becomes visible when the third brake light illuminates, and there’s a sticker on the back window that reads “OGZJ.”

There’s plenty more Jeep has done to this lucky survivor, so keep reading for the full run-down.

Dodge To Offer Challenger Demon With Faster All-Electric Option

With the seemingly endless parade of teaser videos and pictures that Dodge is churning out to whet our appetites for the upcoming Challenger SRT Demon, there’s certainly been no shortage of speculation as to what will be offered under the hood. Most folks believe this drag monster will come equipped with the same blown 6.2-liter V-8 as the Challenger Hellcat, albeit with a bit more output than the 707 horsepower provided by the bad cat. However, no one expected this – electric motors and a battery pack.

The startling revelation comes courtesy of insider sources citing an internal memo between Dodge and SRT that looks to “explore alternative power sources” in the ongoing quest for ever-faster performance machines. One company official, who asked to remain anonymous, said the Tesla Model S was considered a serious threat to the Demon’s intended domination at the drag strip, and as such, Dodge would offer an even-faster Demon EV to counter.

While electric performance enthusiasts are thrilled at the prospect, traditionalists are appalled. “I want my car to sound like it’s a volcano erupting, with explosions and fire – not an overactive blender,” said one elderly racer upon hearing the news.

The Lambo Huracan Performante Comes in All Sorts of Awesome Colors

If you love high-performance cars and racing (how can you not?), you’re probably dreaming about lapping the Nurburgring track in the incredible Lamborghini Huracan Performante right now. However, unless you have a fat wallet and have already placed an order, you’ll never have the chance to do that. Let’s face it, the Performante is awfully expensive for the average Joe and it’s probably sold out anyway. Fortunately, you can still design the Performante of your dreams in the online configurator and its absolutely free.

The configurator is pretty straight forward and doesn’t include too many options beyond the usual exterior and performance upgrades, but the number of exterior colors available is impressive. There are two solid colors and five metallic hues, mostly white, black, and gray. But go with the Pearl Effect range and you can get the stunning Giallo Inti, Arancio Borealis, and Verde Mantis. Beyond that, there’s a rage of custom Ad Personam finishes, including matte, solid, metallic, and pearl. Interesting choices include Giallo Horus, Verde Scandal, Viola Ophelia, Oro Elios, Blu Cepheus, and Viola SE 30th. The latter is based on the color that Lambo launched for the Diablo SE30 Jota back in the 1990s.

Naturally, all these colors are paired to the green-white-red Italian "tricolore" above the side skirts and the dark-colored "forged composite" elements such as the side skirts, diffuser, and front splitter.

Next up, you need to pick the color for the carbon-ceramic brakes, and you can choose between six caliper finishes. There’s black, green, orange, red, silver, and yellow, each providing interesting contrasts with several body colors. Since I "painted" my Performante in Verde Mantis, I went with red calipers, since red and green are complementary colors.

As soon as you finish up the calipers, the configurator moves on to the rims. All wheels measure 20 inches, but there are three design with various finishes. The double-five-spoke rims are called Mimas and can be had in either silver, gloss black or matte titanium. The multi-spoke Narvi wheels are available in either high-sheen black or bronze, while the five-spoke, forged Loge wheels are black and come with either black or red center locking nut. The latter seems to go well with the red calipers on my build.

The configurator then moves onto technology, where you can choose whether you want a sensor or sensor plus camera for park assistance. You can also select the Style Package, which adds darker exhaust pipes among other features.

2017 Jeep Safari Concept

The crop of concept Jeeps for the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari are upon us, and Jeep has spared no expense to wow Wrangler enthusiast with several outlandish builds, including this – the Safari Concept. Based on the Wrangler Unlimited, this one-off custom features unique parts throughout, not the least of which are the rear suicide doors, vinyl windows, and clear top. Oh, and it has a drone mounted on the roof. You know, for doing drone stuff. Jeep says it built the Safari concept to “bring the outdoors in, while keeping the doors and roof on.” We’re big fans of running without the doors and top, but the idea isn’t lost on us.

Most of this Wrangler remains stock, but many key areas have been updated. First, the grille is new, shared also with the Quicksand Concept, and is likely the grille for the upcoming Wrangler JL, the replacement for the decade-old Wrangler JK. Custom wheels, bumpers, rocker panels, fenders, and interior round out the concept.

Inside, the seats appear to be borrowed from the Fiat 500 Abarth, the stock radio is replaced with an Apple iPad, and the steering wheel is borrowed from the FCA parts bin. Lime green accents are carried around the body and interior, including the door jams and lightweight top.

There’s definitely more to this Jeep, though, so keep reading for the full scoop.

BMW 2 Series Convertible

It’s been three years since BMW started rolling the 2 Series into dealer showrooms, effectively removing the coupe and cabrio body styles from the 1 Series lineup and giving those compacts a new name. Just recently we saw shots of a “facelifted” 2 Series coupe prototype heading out for some testing, and now we’re looking at the convertible version which, coincidentally, is wearing the same little bit of camo. As such, this so-called facelift isn’t bringing much in terms of change, but the car should get a new, smaller grille layout, slightly revised headlights, new graphics for the taillights out back, and maybe even a few changes inside as our photographers have reported that there was some covering over the dashboard. Word has it the engines that motivate the little cabrio that could even get an update, but you’ll want to take that with a grain of salt for now.

The updated 2 Series is expected to be revealed in late 2017 and go on sale for 2018 so there’s still a little while to wait before we get to see the few changes that come with the new model year. But, let’s take a closer look and see what’s going on with this prototype. There might be something interesting lurking in the finer details.

2017 Jeep Quicksand Concept

Okay, I’m a big sucker for the Wrangler, but I’ve got a soft spot for vintage metal, particularly from the American hot rod glory days. Well, Jeep has combined the two with this – the Quicksand Concept. This one-off concept Jeep was built for the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari, an annual event in Moab, Utah where thousands of Jeep enthusiasts come to drive desert trails. It’s also been home to outlandish concepts built by Jeep for the last decade.

The Quicksand concept started as a two-door Wrangler but has been completely transformed into something altogether cooler. The wheelbase has been stretched, making more stable off road, the suspension is lifted and features huge coil-over shocks at each corner, and the standard V-6 engine has been scrapped for a massive, 392 cubic-inch Hemi V-8. Of course, that’s just the start.

Check out that kinked grille. I’d bet that’s the grille from the upcoming Wrangler JL, the next-generation of Wrangler. It wouldn’t surprise any Jeep fan to see FCA engineers pull a stunt like that…

The interior of the Quicksand concept is all retro, featuring low-back bucket seats, a huge shifter for the manual transmission, and some throw-back gauges for that authentic feel.

There’s plenty more to talk about, so keep reading for all the details.

Toyota FT-4X Concept

It appears Toyota is ready to debut an off-roader concept vehicle at the 2017 New York Auto Show. The announcement came via a single teaser image showing a Goodyear tire mounted on an alloy wheel. Though Toyota is silent the details, some educated guessing and speculation sheds light on this possible future product.

First off, check out those tread blocks. They’re chunky with plenty of space in between. This suggests an off-roader or a moderately capable crossover. The tires are likely directional too, hinted by the arrow on the left side of the teaser image. Off to the right, the tire size of 225/55R18 is embossed into the sidewall. A little math shows these tires are roughly 28 inches tall. As Truck Trend pointed out, that’s about two inches larger than the tires fitted to Toyota’s RAV4 Rally racer and about two inches smaller than the tires on the Tacoma TRD Sport.

So what could Toyota be building? Our bet is a mildly off-road-capable crossover, possibly smaller than the RAV4. Think Honda C-HR but with more ground clearance, suspension travel, and AWD. The funky nature of the C-HR comes across in the FT-4X’s bright orange accented bumper and detailing on the wheel. Concept vehicles are often flashy to attract attention, though, so we might be completely wrong.

The only solid information Toyota released was the location, date, and time of the FT-4X’s debut. It will break cover at 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12 at the New York Auto Show. You’ll be able to watch the reveal on Toyota’s live stream here.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Launched in 2015, the 991-generation GT3 RS was a significant update over the GT3 and a big departure from the previous car design-wise, having borrowed base bodywork from the Turbo model. On the other hand, the 4.0-liter inline-six was pretty much identical to the 997-generation GT3 RS 4.0 model, as was the 500-horsepower output, a bit of letdown for those expecting a more powerful car. This minor inconvenience will be fixed with the upgraded GT3 RS, which should gain a more potent engine now that the standard GT3 has been updated to the same 4.0-liter engine.

Unleashed on public roads in early 2017, the upcoming 911 GT3 RS looks ready to hit dealerships by the end of the year. Although the rear section is still based on the pre-facelift 911, the front fascia has already been updated to the fresh design and Porsche is probably already testing the new underpinnings. Notable changes should include revised aerodynamics, new tech inside the cabin, and a more powerful flat-six unit. However, while the GT3 RS has been the most powerful iteration of the 991-generation 911 and will continue to sit at the top of the range with the revised engine, it will no longer be the most potent model at the end of the 911’s current life cycle. New spy shots confirmed that Porsche is launching a GT2 RS, which will have a significantly more powerful turbocharged engine.

Nonetheless, the GT3 RS will remain the ultimate naturally aspirated track-toy with a Porsche badge at least until the next-generation model arrives in a few years. Expect the revised 911 GT3 RS to debut in September 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Uses A/C to Cool Its Massive Engine

The 2017 New York Auto Show is just around the corner and so is the highly anticipated Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, the vehicle that may revolutionize the muscle car segment. With the official unveiling less than two weeks away, Dodge launched yet another teaser that showcases an industry-first feature. This time around, the FCA brand brags that the Challenger Demon is the first-ever, factory production car with a liquid-to-air charge air cooler chiller system.

Dodge says that the exclusive performance feature enables the muscle car to achieve charge air induction temperatures previously unattainable by pressure-charged street-legal production vehicles. While conventional cooling methods use air or coolant to reduce the air induction temperature as it is pushed through the charge air cooler, the Challenger’s air conditioning system is diverted to cool the engine’s charge air cooling system when needed. This happens only when the car is used in Drag mode.

Thanks to this system, the intake air temperature can drop by up to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, which enhances performances at the drag strip. By how much compared to the Hellcat is still a mystery but more data will become available when the Demon breaks cover at the 2017 New York Auto Show next month. Stay tuned for updates!

BMW, Mercedes, and Audi Just Got Punked Out by the Kia Stinger

There was a time when getting bullied meant you fought back and reclaimed your dignity, and after years of being bullied by the world, Kia finally started swinging back at the competition. You could say Kia fired its first shots with the 2017 Kia Cadenza and the 2016 Kia Optima, but it went full-on nuclear when it showed up at the Detroit Auto Show with the Kia Stinger. It’s sporty, insanely comfortable, packed to the brim with technology, and offered in range-topping form with a 3.3-liter, Biturbo, V-6 that we now know is capable of pushing it up to 62 mph in as little as 4.9 seconds – 0.2-seconds faster than Kia’s original estimate of 5.1 seconds.

News of its official 0-to-60 time comes courtesy of is Asian-market debut at the 2017 Seoul Motor Show, where it’s being displayed, for the first time, next to the Stinger GT Concept from which it got a lot of its DNA. So, for those of you still on the fence about this Korean brand, it’s time to accept that it’s not the econobox, throw-away car maker that it once was. I mean, after all, we’re talking about a Kia with as much as 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. But, the real question is, how does its 0-to-60 time stack up against the competition? Keep reading to find out.

Help Us Find The Best Top-Shelf Rust Buckets On The Internet!

It should come as no surprise that we here at TopSpeed are more than a little familiar with the over-the-top, superlative-laden language of high-end automotive press releases. Automakers like Bentley, Bugatti, and Rolls-Royce are the worst offenders of this, heaping on the self-praise with phrases like “exquisite,” “hand-crafted,” and “the ultimate.” Which got us thinking – why should six-figure luxury mobiles for the uber-rich be the only rides worthy of such flowery language? What about normal cars, or better yet, really crappy cars? You know, the kind you’d find on the umpteenth page of craigslist? And thus, Top-Shelf Rust Buckets was born.

Here’s our proposal, dear reader – you go out and find the best (worst?) rust bucket you can, then bring it here and post it in the comments section with a link. If we like it, we’ll spin it as a celebration of all things motoring, a four-wheeled tribute to the glory of the automobile.

Confused? Read on for a few choice examples of what we’re on about.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

The Porsche 911 has stood as the ultimate sports car for more than 50 years, but the latest 991 body style is proof that Porsche still has plenty of tricks up its sleeve. With the refreshed 991.2 having already debuted in late 2015, the automotive world is now one step closer to the return of the extreme 911: the GT2 RS.

As is usually the case with any factory-built, race-ready sports car, the previous Porsche 911 GT2 RS made strong impressions when it was introduced in 2011, and as we’ve seen from the current 991 lineup, this is definitely the best 911 ever built. What this means for the upcoming GT2 RS has yet to be seen, but reports indicate that the hyper 911 will go on sale for the 2019 model year.

Until then, all we have is a bunch of photos of prototypes being tested on public roads and a rendering based on the current 911 Turbo. As always, we’ve put all the information we already know together in a speculative review, just so you know what to expect from Stuttgart’s most powerful 911 yet.

Updated 03/30/2017: The upcoming Porsche GT2 RS was caught testing once again, and by the look of the prototype, it appears that an official debut is just around the corner.

Renault Megane R.S.

Renault has been pretty successful lately, with 2016 marking the debut of the fourth-generation Megane, which can now be had as a five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and as an estate. Things are about to get a little juicier in the Megane stable, however, as we’ve just received some pictures of what we believe to be the Megane R.S. prototype putting in some work on public roads. Right now, the car is wearing all the gear of the Megane GT, but there are a couple of clues that give this model away as a prototype – like those center-mounted exhaust outlets poking out of the rear bumper, for instance.

The exhaust outlets aren’t all we have to go by, but we’ll get more into that later. For now, we have some very interesting possibilities to consider. First, let’s start off by saying that the Megane R.S. will only be available as a five-door hatchback since Renault has no plans for a coupe variant of the Megane, so there’s that. Secondly, we think Renault might have the Focus RS in its sights, and if so, the Megane R.S. will likely inherit an all-wheel-drive system to make it a true competitor. Furthermore, Renault also has a unique opportunity to put the Focus RS in its place if it can manage to muster up more than 300 horsepower.

Of course, the model you see in the pictures here is just a prototype that was cobbled together out of a Megane GT, so let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, let’s take a look at these new pictures, talk a little about what we’ll see in the future, and make some predictions based on what we see and already know. Join me, just a little farther down the page.

Update 3/30/2017: Renault Sport just hit one million Facebook followers, so it saw fit to release a special video to celebrate. At the end, however, there was a little surprise. Check out the special section in our review below to see what it’s all about.

Skoda Vision E

Skoda is gearing up to kick Tesla’s ass with a competitor for the Model X. The production model will be Skoda’s first electric vehicle and is set to go on sale at the turn of the decade. But, before all of that happens, Skoda has decided to preview that model with an “SUV coupe” known as the Vision E at the Shanghai Auto Show. Said to have a range of more than 300 miles, all-wheel drive, Level 3 autonomy, and a silhouette that’s sure to grind wonder boy’s gears a bit, the Vision E proves that Skoda isn’t playing around these days.

Its production equivalent will likely be toned down as far as exterior design goes, especially in the front end. But, that’s usually the case when it comes to concepts, right? Back to the subject at hand, the Vision E is just a bit shorter and wider than the new Kodiaq and is built on VW’s MEB platform. So far, we’ve yet to see official images, but Skoda saw fit to release a few sketches to keep us on ice until the Shanghai Auto Show kicks off. So, let’s dive on in and talk a little more about what’s going on with the Vision E, and what it tells us about Skoda’s future.

2017 Toyota Hilux Tonka Concept

Toyota Australia is commemorating its corporation’s 80th anniversary, along with the 70th anniversary of the famed toy truck builder, Tonka, with this one-off concept HiLux pickup styled with outlandish bodywork and ton of off-roading equipment. Fittingly called the HiLux Tonka Concept, this truck is designed as the grown-up version of a kid’s favorite toy truck. And it should have no trouble traversing an adult-sized sandbox.

The HiLux Tonka features a six-inch lift thanks to a taller suspension and portal hubs. Toyo Open Country MT tires sized at 35 inches give it all the traction it needs, while custom bumpers add protection and the ability for self-recovery. Hidden behind the front bumper is an electric winch, which frame-mounted tow hooks on each side.

Of course, what’s a Tonka truck without some awesome black graphics atop a yellow base coat of paint? Toyota didn’t leave Tonka fans wanting in that department. And besides the bumpers, the hood and tailgate are also unique, adding to the appeal.

Sadly, neither Toyota nor Tonka have any plans to sell copies of this truck. Rather, it will make its rounds at auto shows, expos, and demonstrations around Australia in the coming months.

Acura TLX

The Acura TLX hit showrooms for the 2015 model year as a replacement for the TL and TSX sedans. After just a couple of years on the market, Acura is introducing a facelifted model for 2018 that will keep the first generation alive until at least 2021. The big new here is that the TLX is getting a new pentagonal grille that not only replaces the beak found on most Acura vehicles but is also pentagonal in shape just like the grille found on the Precision concept and the updated MDX crossover. It’s scheduled to make its debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show, but Acura has seen fit to release a teaser that shows off that new grille, along with new headlight units, and what appears to be a new fascia as well. Little else is known at this time, but Acura says we can expect “new premium features technology.

"The 2018 TLX will receive new styling elements that ratchet up its emotion and reflect Acura’s focus on Precision Crafted Performance," said Jon Ikeda, Acura’s vice president and general manager. "Acura customers embraced the MDX when we raised its game with bold, new styling, and we’re pumped to show how we’re elevating the TLX experience."

With that said, let’s take a good look at this teaser and speculate a little about what else we’ll see when the sheet is pulled off the refreshed TLX in just a couple of weeks.

I'm harnessing the power of gardening to help autistic people

Kim Stoddart explains how her son’s autism diagnosis set her on a mission to use therapeutic gardening to help those on the spectrum

If someone had said to me ten years ago that autism and the therapeutic benefits of gardening will become your life, I wouldn’t have believed them. Yes, I enjoyed growing some of my own food in my back yard in Brighton, but it wasn’t until my son Arthur’s autism diagnosis a few years back that everything changed. Now I believe so strongly in the power of gardening to help those on the spectrum having seen its positive impact on my son, I’ve set up a social enterprise to do just this.

Although it’s still very early days, things are starting to take shape on my smallholding in Ceredigion, West Wales. The training garden is ready for the resilient gardener course I’ve just launched; all profits from which will help fund our work with people affected by autism. It will also be used as a therapeutic space as it’s packed full of scented plants, natural sounds and wildlife galore to help provide all important emotional regulation as well as sensory interest.

Is the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Windshield Crooked or Wicked?

Just leaked on WranglerForums.com is what’s believed to be the next-generation Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Codenamed the JL, this four-door wrangler will replace the current Jeep Wrangler JL for the 2018 model year. Until now, details have been rather spread out, with hardly any information on the Wrangler’s overall appearance and functionality. But thanks to two grainy images, we’re getting a first look.

Much to the angst of Jeep fans, the 2018 Wrangler will indeed come with hard top that’s completely removable. The doors are also completely removable, just like the past Wranglers. The overall design is more evolutionary than revolutionary, sharing much of the overall appearance with the current Wrangler JK.

Of course, the devil is in the details. The grille has a rearward bend, just as we’ve seen in spy shots and other leaked images. The front quarter panels feature some sort of heat extractor or vent just behind the fender. The hood also features vents, much like the optional Heat Extraction hood offered on some Wrangler models. The greenhouse seems taller, with more height to the glass. The doors have a strong character line just under the window, possibly carving out where the half-metal doors will end.

And even more interesting, the windshield seems to have two hinges. Perhaps Jeep won’t kill the folding windshield design after all! As for the roll cage, it shares a similar layout to the current Wrangler JK, but it looks to be better integrated for stronger roll-over protection.

Around back the tailgate is now hinged on the driver side, making curb-side loading much easier. The spare tire is missing, but we do expect the production model will feature it in this traditional location. The bumpers have a familiar style, shaped like those found on special edition Wranglers like the 75th Anniversary, Rubicon Hard Rock, and Rubicon Recon.

All told, this is a huge relief for Jeep enthusiast worried about a watered-down, mall-rated Wrangler JL. Those fears can be set aside knowing Jeep has kept all the lovable aspects of the Wrangler in place. Let’s just hope this isn’t some fake news rendering crap designed to scam us all…

Will the Ford GT's Drive Modes Stop Owners From Going Full Mustang?

The Ford GT may be all official and available to customers — with the first allocation already sold out — but FoMoCo is still rolling out information about the supercar as buyers await delivery. We’ve already learned about the tremendous technology behind the new GT, such as the industry-first gorilla glass windshield and the carbon-fiber wheels, and now it’s time to have a closer look at the car’s driving modes. The GT will come with five, each prepared for different driving scenarios.

Much like any vehicle out there, the American supercar starts off in Normal mode. Conceived for everyday driving, the Normal mode sets the ground clearance at 120 mm, while throttle and transmission calibrations are set up for standard driving. Traction and stability control systems cannot be adjusted, while the rear wing deploys automatically for aero assistance at 90 mph, returning to its normal position at 81 mph. The wing still deploys as an airbrake if sensors detect aggressive braking. Finally, the driver can soften the suspension by adjusting compression and rebound in the dampers at the press of a button.

In the Wet setting, which is obviously recommended for wet tarmac and rainy conditions, the ride height and other systems remain in their default, Normal-mode setup. However, throttle control is adjusted to limit the induction of slipping and sliding, thus enabling greater stability. The comfort suspension can also be activated in this mode.

Then there’s Sport mode, yet another feature that’s rather common for modern vehicles. When using this setting, the driver gets a more responsive throttle calibration and the anti-lag system kicks in. Developed for the Le Mans-winning GT race car, the anti-lag keeps the turbo spinning at all time to provide boost on demand. The normal ground clearance remains in place here too, but the comfort feature is deactivated, while AdvanceTrac stability and traction control become driver-adjustable allowing three additional settings. The Sport mode also allows more slip, yaw, and oversteer, while gear changes are made quicker and the clutch disengages more rapidly for enhanced acceleration.

Setting the Ford GT apart from most performance cars are the Track and V-Max mode, but more on those after the jump.

Will SVO finally expand its reach into serious off-roading?

Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations is rumored to be working on a hard-core off-road package for the new Discovery. Typically focused on high-end luxury models of Land Rover and Range Rover SUVs, along with high-performance models of Jaguar and Range Rovers, SVO might swing into the dirt. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this rumor, but Auto Express has a soft confirmation from SVO boss John Edwards.

Edwards had a conversation with Auto Express at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Therein, Edwards revealed some telling hints, saying, “I can’t tell you what the SV version of the Discovery will be like but in my mind it will be in between Paris Dakar and Camel Trophy. Somewhere in there is a product waiting to get out.”

Of course, the Dakar and Camel Trophy are two famed off-road competitions, with the Dakar being a moderate to high-speed race, while the Camel Trophy was more low-speed exploration through inhospitable terrains. Perhaps the upcoming SVO Discovery will be capable of doing both. Don’t expect Land Rover to compromise on passenger comfort, either.

Rumors also suggest this special Land Rover will be called the Discovery SVX, hinting at his all-terrain abilities. No official word has been given, but we’d expect the SVX to come with high-profile meaty tires, underbody skid plates, rock sliders, exposed tow hooks, and perhaps a revised air suspension system allowing for more ground clearance. Off-road lights and a roof rack aren’t out of the question, either.

Expect the interior to feature all-weather floor mats, durable leather seats, and the latest in off-road techno-gadgets from Land Rover. Power could come from the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine or the torquey 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6. Regardless, the ZF eight-speed automatic and full-time 4WD system will be present.

No dates have been announced, but the Discovery SVX could debut as soon as late 2017 or early 2018. That follows Edwards’ comments to AE, saying “We plan to introduce a new halo product every year for the next three or four years,” with an apparent emphasis on an earlier date.

Forget the lawnmower – just let your grass grow

If you want to encourage wildflowers in your garden, leave your lawn to its own devices, argues Trevor Dines, botanist at conservation charity Plantlife

One of the best ways to encourage wildflowers in your garden is to leave a patch of lawn to its own devices during spring and summer.

The chances are that at least some wildflowers will appear if you leave the lawnmower alone. What comes up in your no-mow patch depends very much on what you start with. If, like me, your lawn is old, rather weedy, and probably hasn’t encountered weedkillers or fertilisers for years, a bit more conscious neglect could transform it into a thriving mini-meadow.

Is BMW Already Testing the M8 on the Nurburgring?

Rumors about BMW reviving the 8 Series have been floating around for many years and the Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept that the German firm unveiled in 2013 poured even more gasoline on the fire. However, BMW has extremely quiet on the matter and it seemed that the 8 Series wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. This changed today, when a rather unusual test car was caught stretching its wheels on the Nurburgring track.

And I say "unusual" because it’s larger than the 6 Series and seems to borrow some features from the Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept. What’s more, there are hints of M-designed elements, which means we could be looking at the highly anticipated M8.

The coupe feels pretty impressive on the ’Ring. Although it has a low stance, the car is quite massive and leans heavily while cornering. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s as heavy as a regular full-size car, but it’s not exactly an M4 either. The styling is obviously of the 6 Series variety. There’s a long hood, a heavily raked roof toward the rear, and a long decklid. However, the overall shape is notably different than a standard 6 Series and the body is significantly longer.

Although wrapped in camouflaged almost entirely, the headlamps are obviously slim, while the kidney-grille is massive, occupying more than half of the car’s width. Both the front end configuration and the profile seem based on the Pininfarina Grand Lusso concept. Below the grille, there are massive vents that may have been designed by the M division. The same goes for the rear bumper, which has large trapezoidal exhaust pipes at each corner. Another hint that this is an M car are the blue M calipers and the larger brake rotors.

Porsche 911

It hasn’t been long since the 991-generation 911 received its mid-cycle facelift in 2016, and it appears that Porsche is already working on the next-generation sports car. Our paparazzi spotted several 911 prototypes being tested on public roads in recent months, and even though the model looks similar to the current-gen 911, we’re quite sure the Germans are actually testing underpinnings for the upcoming model, due to arrive sometime in 2018.

Very little is known about the next-generation 911, but word has it that the biggest changes will occur under the skin. Besides the all-turbo lineup — the Carrera gained forced induction with the 991.2 facelift — the 911 is also set to receive a hybrid drivetrain for the very first time. Although this rumor has yet to be confirmed by Stuttgart, hybridization is a natural step for the 911 — given Porsche is already offering hybrid versions of the Panamera and Cayenne, as well as the 918 supercar and the 919, Le Mans-winning race car. Of course, the gasoline powerplants will get their fair share of updates too.

The 911 will also gain a new modular platform with more flexibility as far as drivetrains go. Word has it the new architecture will also be used in the next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman, as well as in the next-gen Audi R8 and upcoming Lamborghini models. Keep reading to find out more about the next-generation 911 and stay tuned for more updates.

Updated 03/28/2017: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Porsche 911 out for a new testing session at Nurburgring.

Would You Let Elon Musk Connect Your Brain to a Computer?

Elon Musk isn’t a bad guy. He can be arrogant at times (can’t we all?) but he’s made huge strides in battery technology, autonomous driving technology, and even getting big hunks of metal (that may eventually carry us to Mars) into space. You would think that a man like Musk, who’s splitting his time between companies like SpaceX and Tesla, would have a full plate, but apparently, his plate isn’t full enough as he has announced a new venture that seeks to interface our brains with computers. The company, which is in the very early stages of creation is called “Neuralink” and looks to implant tiny electrodes in our brains to allow us to connect directly to computers.

The crazy thing is that the whole thing has been pretty well thought out, and has been a concept routinely explored in science fiction as well. If this new company is successful, it would be able to make a direct cortical interface between man and computer, ultimately allowing our thoughts and maybe even memories to be downloaded to a computer, or allow us to control a computer without using anything but our minds. Eventually, the technology could even be used to increase cognitive capabilities that allow us to increase our intelligence and memory. It’s like adding RAM to a computer, really. It might sound a little outlandish but, believe it or not, it’s actually a feasible idea. After all, the human brain is considered to be the most advanced computer in existence thus far, right?

Welding Gases & Fumes

Welding gases and fumes can be dangerous to anyone who breathes them in. A different mix of gases is emitted with every welding project. These gases can cause adverse effects on the body depending on the duration of exposure. The best way to protect yourself is to keep your head out of the smoke while welding.

How workers are exposed
Welders have a greater risk of being exposed to welding fumes, but anyone working near them might also inhale these fumes. This is more likely to happen when working indoors or in enclosed spaces. Because the air can’t dissipate, the fumes can accumulate to a dangerous level. This means that anyone working in an enclosed space with a welder is exposed to the same level of risk.

The dangers to workers
Different metallic components in welding fumes occur due to different materials, electrodes, and type of welding used. Various airborne gases and fumes that can be found during the welding process include the following:

  • Nitrous oxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Shielding gases (argon or helium)
  • Ozone
  • Metal fumes (manganese and chromium)

Short-term exposure can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, dizziness and vomiting.  Long-tern exposure can cause occupational asthma, pneumonia, cancer and kidney or nervous system damage.

How to reduce the risks
To lessen the hazards of being exposed to welding gases and fumes, there are many risk controls that can be implemented. The most effective way is to eliminate the source of the hazard, if possible. If not, other ways are listed below, arranged in order of efficiency. Start choosing your next steps by asking the questions following each control.

Elimination or substitution
The most effective risk control is eliminating the threat by replacing or substituting a safer method or material.

  • Can a less dangerous material be used?
  • Are there other ways that create fewer gases or fumes?

Engineering controls
Changes to the facility, machinery, and methods used can greatly lessen exposure.

  • Can ventilation be enhanced?
  • Can fans be installed to keep the smoke away from welders and others?

Administrative controls
Administrative controls include changing the rules and regulations, distributing awareness materials, and training workers.

  • Is there an exposure control plan known to workers?
  • Have workers been a part of a hygiene awareness program?

Personal protective equipment
The least effective control is personal protective equipment. It’s very important to use at least one other control in addition to PPE.

  • Are workers always wearing complete & appropriate personal protective equipment?
  • Are respirators fit-tested for each employee to ensure effectiveness?
