Rumor says Jeep is cancelling the 2019 Grand Wagoneer

It seems the rumor mill is spinning out word that Jeep has canceled plans to build the Grand Wagoneer – the high-end competitor slotted to compete with vehicles like the Range Rover. Early speculation had put the Grand Wagoneer debuting for the 2019 model.

The news comes from Autoline Daily, which cites speculation from AutoForecast Solution, a company that provides automotive business planning. The purported problem stems from engineering problems with the Grand Wagoneer’s chassis. The luxury SUV was slated to ride on a widened and lengthened version of the unibody platform that underpins the Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. AutoForcasts Solution says the platform could not support a full-size SUV with three rows.

Autoline did add speculation to the news, supposing the Grand Wagoneer could borrow the Ram 1500’s ladder frame chassis. That move is plausible given the Ram’s rear suspension uses a multi-link system with coil springs, just a many modern body-on-frame SUVs do. If this were the case, the Grand Wagoneer would become a competitor to the Cadillac Escalade, as Truck Trend points out. We would also add the Infiniti QX80 to that mix.

However, we find it incredibly hard to believe the engineers at Jeep can’t make the Grand Cherokee’s chassis work. After all, the Durango is already 11.4 inches longer than the Grand Cherokee and has a five-inch-longer wheelbase.

What’s more, FCA boss Sergio Marchionne seems to be smitten with the idea of the Grand Wagoneer competing with big-time players like the Range Rover and Jeep CEO Mike Manley confirmed the three-row luxury Jeep in a conversation with Motoring. Last but certainly not least is the spied silhouette rendering of the entire future Jeep lineup, including the range-topping SUV, at a dealership meeting back in October.

The final nail in this rumor comes from an unnamed inside source that very recently told Truck Trend the Grand Wagoneer and its less-luxurious brother, the Wagoneer, are both still headed to production.

Ford Mustang Blue Edition

The sixth-generation Ford Mustang arrived in late 2013 and brought many new features to Ford’s iconic nameplate. Arguably the most important addition was the independent rear suspension, a system that the Chevrolet had adopted for the Camaro way back in 2009. The pony car also gained a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making it the first Mustang to use one since the third-generation model. Finally, Ford made the Mustang a global car, which means that customers in markets such as Europe and Asia can buy the pony from dealerships rather than the gray market. The move was met with much enthusiasm in Europe, where countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom are home to many Mustang collectors.

While U.S.- and Euro-spec cars are mostly the same, Ford developed a special suspension system and engine internals for the European market, in order to better suit the roads and emission requirements of the "Old Continent." Now that the Mustang has found its way into European dealerships, Ford also created a couple of special-edition models for customers on the other side of the pond. The Blue Edition is one of them, and it pays tribute to the high-impact colors that Ford offered in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“The Ford Mustang has no trouble standing out on European roads, and with the new Ford Mustang Black Shadow Edition and Blue Edition models, Mustang drivers will be turning even more heads,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president of Ford of Europe. “Special edition Ford Mustangs have been an important part of the Mustang story for more than 50 years, and now customers in Europe can play their own part in the iconic car’s rich special edition history.”

Rolls-Royce SUV

The luxury SUV bug has bitten its share of automakers in recent years. Up to now, Rolls-Royce has been an exception. Come 2015, luxury automaker has confirmed it is working on an SUV of its own.

Better late than never, Rolls-Royce.

News of Rolls’ interest in developing a luxury SUV came to light after design chief Giles Taylor told Autocar that his design team had begun tinkering with sketches of a potential SUV, possibly to gauge the feasibility of building one in the future. Taylor was also quick to point out that the team was still in the infancy stage of an SUV design and that any talk of "proportions and three dimensions" were premature. This changed dramatically in February 2015, when Rolls revealed that it’s working on a car "that offers the luxury of a Rolls-Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain."

Although Rolls-Royce has no history with SUVs, the company cited vehicles from the past which have been successful in events such as the Scottish Reliability Trials and the Alpine Trials, and had the ability to carry their owners "over challenging terrain with absolute reliability and comfort" in Australia, India, and other parts of the world. The SUV’s true purpose is to challenge Bentley’s upcoming Bentayga, but the two won’t meet face to face earlier than 2017. Meanwhile, let’s see what Rolls-Royce might have in store for its first-ever SUV.

Update 12-01-2016: Nine months after we got our first glimpse at the Cullinan SUV, Rolls-Royce releases two official, camouflaged images on a production-ready SUV and confirms that the SUV is being called Project Cullinan. Later this month it will be in the arctic circle doing some more testing before heading to the middle east in 2017. Check out our review below to see the new images and to learn more about it.

Mercedes-AMG to Launch GT C Coupe in 2017; GT R Roadster May Follow

Introduced for the 2015 model year, the Mercedes-AMG GT nameplate has already evolved into a full family of sports cars, including four versions as of late 2016. Launched as the GT and GT S, the German coupe also spawned a roadster, a track-ready GT R model, and a higher-performance drop top called the GT C. That’s pretty impressive for a car that’s been around for only a couple of years, but it seems that AMG is planning to expand the lineup even further.

According to Autoblog, who had a chat with AMG boss Tobias Moers at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the German firm is planning to roll out at least one more version of the AMG GT. Specifically, the recently unveiled AMG GT C roadster will also get a coupe version, which will bridge the gap between the AMG GT S and the more hardcore AMG GT R. Moers declined to confirm a specific timetable, but the AMG product roadmap that surfaced the Web earlier this year listed the GT C coupe as a late 2017 arrival.

When asked about a convertible version of the AMG GT R, the next logical model in the lineup, Moers said that "it’s just a discussion going on, we talked about it in the company, but I don’t know the market potential about that." That’s by no means confirmation, but it’s pretty clear that AMG is considering such a model. But, should this car be green-lighted for production, don’t expect it to arrive before the GT C coupe.

As a brief reminder, the AMG GT C is the most powerful roadster version of the nameplate, featuring a 4.0-liter V-8 rated at 550 turbocharged horses and 502 pound-feet of torque. That;s 94 horsepower more than the GT and 47 horses more than the GT S. This output also makes it the second-most powerful GT model after the GT R. Speaking of which, the R-badged model comes with an even more powerful version of the biturbo V-8, which generates 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. It’s also the quickest model available yet, needing only 3.5 seconds to hit 60 mph on its way to a top speed of 198 mph.

The Heir To The Fiat Fortune Acts Naughty, Gets Arrested

Lapo Elkann is known in automotive circles as the grandson of the late Fiat patriarch Gianni Agnelli and the heir to the Fiat fortune. But he’s also known to be a flamboyant character who almost died in 2005 due to a drug overdose. So it comes as no surprise that when Elkann makes the headlines, it’s probably for something that only somebody of his personality could even think of, let alone actually do. Can we consider faking his own kidnapping as something Elkann is capable of doing? Apparently so because it’s been reported that Elkann was arrested and charged in New York for exactly that reason.

According to multiple reports which quote anonymous police sources, Elkann was suspected of faking his own kidnapping in New York because he ran out of cash after throwing a two-night party-palooza to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The Daily Beast, in particular, reported that Elkann flew to New York during the holidays and proceeded to have the time of his life with a male escort. The same source quoted by The Daily Beast alleges that Elkann and his buddy consumed alcohol and drugs until they ran out of cash, at which point the 39-year old contacted his family claiming to have been kidnapped and that the perpetrators were asking for $10,000 in ransom money. The family proceeded to contact the New York Police Department, which in turn, launched an investigation into the matter, only to discover that Elkann himself was allegedly behind the whole thing after he and his partner went to collect the ransom money.

Elkann and his companion were arrested during the NYPD’s sting operation with the Fiat heir being charged with filing a false police report. According to the NYPD, the escort’s arrest has since been voided and sealed, which likely means that Elkann will be facing these charges all by his lonesome, at least if it hasn’t been settled already.
